“The question is ‘Where’s the money?’ But it could also mean, where are all the art lovers of the world, or any sub group, like the Impressionist lovers of the world.” Looking at her colleague Oskar again, she added, “Or classic BMW motorcycle enthusiasts. It doesn’t matter which tribe we are talking about, the process is the same. Let’s follow the money. We are used to looking at ‘money centers’ but how does that money get there? What is the path it takes? How do you see the flow of money—and I admit that this is a crass example, but for our purposes I’ll continue using it—to one of these centers? Money doesn’t just fall on New York City; it flows there—and flows out.

For us, the question had been how to track this ebb and flow, call it invisible movement, whether it was money or pizza lovers. We wanted to see where there was a lot of a given substance or where there existed a dearth.
